BARLOW, Emily Elizabeth

Emily Barlow was born in Riverstown, Co. Sligo (christened as Elizabeth Emma) in January 1876. She was daughter, and possibly youngest child, of John David and Margaret M. (née Hunter) Barlow). Her father died in February 1891 and her mother died in 1900. In the Census the following year, Emily was working as a Parlour Maid in Rameltown, Co. Donegal with the family of Harry Stewart, a Captain of the Donegal Militia and a G. P., who had 3 young children.

By the 1911 Census, Emily had moved to Dublin and was working, again as a Parlour Maid, for the Verner family in Rathmichael, Co. Dublin. The head of the family was Sir Edward Wingfield Verner and he and his wife, Agnes Dorothy, had 5 young children. Emily was one of the 9 domestic staff and one of two Parlour Maids.

It is not known why Emily was on the RMS Leinster in October 1918. She was aged 42 and did not survive the sinking, but her body was recovered and buried in Deansgrange Cemetery in Kingstown. The burial record gives her last place of residence as Mostyn, Cheshire and the small headstone includes the inscription “IN THE PRESENCE IS FULNESS OF JOY”
